Dr. Hurst Hannum is a professor at the Fletcher School and one of the premier writers on self-determination issues.
Forced Migration Projects A multitude of ethnic tensions and hostilities have resulted in substantial population displacements in the countries of the former Soviet Union. With over 130 ethnic groups in the former Soviet Union, and nationalism, secessionist movements, and discriminatory measures in evidence, the potential for further dislocation is enormous. The Forced Migration Projects are action-oriented programs that monitor circumstances in the 15 countries that emerged or re-emerged after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, in order to warn of forced movements and identify conditions that may cause such dislocations, including armed conflict, human rights violations, economic underdevelopment, environmental degradation, and other failures of governance.
Fund for Peace The Fund for Peace is committed to preventing war and alleviating the conditions that cause war. The organization believes that the best research and analysis should be the basis for action and should produce practical policy solutions. All of its programs reflect this approach. The "Conflict Prevention and Recovery Program" provides decision-makers with the capacity of both conflict early warning and assessment of recovery for informed decision-making.
Henry Stimson Center The Henry L. Stimson Center is an independent, nonprofit, public policy institute committed to finding and promoting innovative solutions to the security challenges confronting the United States and other nations in the twenty-first century. The Center's programs aim both to inform the public and decision makers and to shape the contours of domestic and international debate on vital issues of international policy.
Hungarian Academy of Sciences The Academys main research focus is to study the underlying trends and factors behind global and regional economic developments, and to examine their present and future impact on the Hungarian economy. In addition, it sets out to contribute to international research through cooperation with top research institutes throughout the world. One of its main research projects is the "Changing Role of States and the Problems of Global Governance."
Initiative on Conflict Resolution & Ethnicity (INCORE) INCORE was founded as a joint initiative between the University of Ulster and the United Nations University to address the management and resolution of conflict, particularly ethnic conflict, through comparative and cooperative research.
Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (ICAR) The Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution offers Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Conflict Analysis and Resolution. Both degree programs are among the first in this field and are part of the mission of the Institute: to advance the understanding and resolution of significant and persistent human conflicts among individuals, small groups, communities, ethnic groups, and nations.
Institute for War & Peace Reporting The Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) in London promotes conflict resolution, society building, and democratization working primarily in transitional societies. It achieves these aims by providing professional training, financial assistance, and an outpost for independent media, human rights activists, and other democratic voices. IWPR's conflict resolution and self determination work covers the Balkans, Caucasus, and Central Asia with specific projects on the Yugoslav war and Afghanistan crisis. Local journalists benefit from IWPR's research, reporting, and training programs. Beyond these programs, IWPR produces objective electronic and printed analysis on conflict resolution and peace building related issues. As the first international NGO founded to support the independent press during the collapse of Yugoslavia, it has become the central implementing organization for media support and developing programs in the region. IWPR also works to support the professionalization of the local media and to increase the awareness of, and reporting on, human rights, post-conflict reconciliation, and democracy within Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Krygyzstan, Kazakstan, Tajikstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan.
Institute for Media Peace and Security The Institute--"an intellectual tool for preventive diplomacy"--aims to educate people in the many ways the media interact with issues of war and peace. It welcomes two kinds of participants: persons from areas of recent, current or potential conflict; and persons from countries strongly concerned with international peace and security. It also plans a research program targeting urgent international peace-related questions in which the media play a significant role. By its education and research programs, and by its day-to-day contacts with UN and regional peacekeeping bodies, the Institute will contribute to new thinking about how free media can help prevent conflict and alert decisionmakers, as well as the general public, to looming risks of war.
Institut für Friedensforschung und Sicherheitspolitik (IFSH) IFSH focuses on global political and security issues within the framework of peace research. Since the end of the East-West conflict, non-military threats to security have become increasingly important. In light of its founding statutes and the continuity of its research, IFSH will be focusing in the future on projects dealing with conflicts of a global nature, with crises of growing relevance for the 21st century, and with key issues of vital and threatening character of latent violence. The Institute's general research objective is the analysis and elaboration of cooperative strategies of conflict resolution and force prevention with special orientation toward options for action by the Federal German government.
Institute on Governance (IOG) The primary interest of the IOG is in undertaking research and analysis that supports policy-makers and working-level practitioners in addressing immediate strategic and operational problems. One of its major research and analytical projects focuses on aboriginal governance.
International Centre on Conflict and Negotiation ICCN is an independent nonprofit research and training center created in 1994. Its main objectives are to study causes, manifestations, means of early prevention, constructive management, and peaceful resolution of ethnic, religious, social, and political conflicts. ICCN coordinates and financially supports projects developed by NGOs and groups of scholars aimed at promoting democratic changes, conflict analysis, and peace studies. The Centre also coordinates, jointly with International Alert, the Initiative in Georgian-Abkhazian Dialogue. The Centre has been involved in a number of projects aimed at initiating the process for the formulation and implementation of the regional-security concept and cooperation strategies in the Caucasus. It has also served as a regional representative of Eawarn.
International Peace Academy (IPA) IPA is an independent, international institution dedicated to promoting the prevention and settlement of armed conflicts between and within states through policy research and development.
International Working Group on Indigenous Affairs IWGIA is an independent international membership organization staffed by specialists and advisers on indigenous affairs. Through collaboration with indigenous peoples, it supports their human rights, right to self-determination, right to territory, control of land and resources, cultural integrity, and the right to development. Through publications, human rights work, networking, conferences, campaigns and projects, IWGIA supports indigenous peoples in their struggle to improve general life conditions, to better relationships with the nation states of which they are part, and to influence the global economic and political forces that affect their lives.
Islamabad Policy Research Institute (IPRI) IPRI is a research institute whose mission is to research, formulate, and promote policies based on the principles of equality and freedom, traditional values, a viable essential defense, and a growing economy. IPRI's long-term recommendations are based on forward-looking assessments of international events and their influence on the region in general, and Pakistan in particular. Part of its research focus is in the areas of global governance, the changing role of sovereignty, and the prevention, management, and resolution of regional and ethnic conflicts.
Institute of World Affairs The Institute is devoted to international understanding and the peaceful resolution of conflict. In support of its mission, the Institute provides training programs designed to enhance professional skills in conflict resolution and infrastructure development. The Institute conducts independent evaluations and designs systems to help improve the management of international conflict. Additionally, the Institute offers education and outreach programs on current issues in international affairs.
Japan Center for Conflict Prevention The Japan Center for Preventive Diplomacy (JCPD) focuses on strengthening the work of the Japanese nongovernmental sector in the prevention of regional and ethnic conflicts worldwide, with a concentration on Asia and the Pacific. Its multi-track approach recognizes roles for governments, multilateral and nongovernmental organizations, academics, individuals, and the media in preventing initial outbreaks of violence, and containing existing conflicts. JCPD carries out internet, domestic, and international activities, including field offices in South Asia and the Middle East, human resources development, educational projects, publishing, network creation, and organizing symposia. Internet activities include the "Dialogue Webpage for Conflicts Worldwide," which solicits contributions on over 17 conflicts, including: the Taiwan Straits, East Timor, Indonesia, Myanmar, Central Asia, Chechnya, the Balkans, Palestine, the Great Lakes Region, and "U.S. Under Terrorist Attack." JCPD e-symposia bring together experts and public participants on issues relevant to the field of conflict prevention. Other activities include an "Overseas Dispatch Team," post-graduate programs in preventive diplomacy, a newsletter, and a website directory of conflict prevention organizations working in Asia and the Pacific.
